Community and Events

Businesses can make a huge difference in their community, which is why giving back is at the heart of everything we do. Supporting and assisting local charities, organisations, groups and schools has built the foundation of what Merlo Coffee is today.

While we support many causes within our community, one of the most significant partnerships we have formed is with The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation (PCHF). The team at The Common Good are conducting research into discovering cures for chronic disease and beating these conditions for good. Since 2014 Merlo’s contributions have directly funded research into medical discoveries that could save or improve our own lives, or those of the people we love.

MEDICAL RESEARCH

Cycle of Giving

There are over 1,300 Australians on the waiting list for a new organ, but there aren’t enough donated organs to give these people a second chance at life. The key to closing this gap is through research; and the research needs to be funded.

The Cycle of Giving is The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation’s annual bicycle ride, raising much-needed funds for this vital organ transplant research. Every $44 raised equates to 1 hour of medical research.

The ride began 12 years ago, with the wife of a transplant recipient making the 100km journey with just 16 other riders. The ride now attracts nearly 700 participants and raised over $215,000 in 2018.

Merlo Coffee are proud to be the key sponsor of the ride as part of our broader support and association with the PCHF. To read more about the medical research project Merlo is supporting click here.

CHOICE & INDEPENDENCE

Youngcare

Every young person, regardless of their care needs, should have the freedom to choose where they live, who they live with and how they live their lives.

Youngcare is a non-for-profit organisation creating choice and independence for young people aged between 18 and 65 with high care needs. They provide fully accessible and age-appropriate living spaces, grants for equipment and home modifications and support through a national phone line.

As a Youngcare Supporter, on May 10 2019, Merlo donated $1 from every cup of coffee sold in all Merlo owned stores to help raise vital funds for young people with high care needs, like Emily and her family. We are proud to have raised $10,000 for Youngcare during this promotion.

Visit the Youngcare website for more information on the important work that they do or to make a donation.

We are looking forward to supporting Youngcare next year as well, stay tuned for more information about how you can partner with us to make a difference.

AUTISM AWARENESS

The Sycamore School

For the past few years, Merlo have proudly supported the wonderful work of The Sycamore School – a school in Alexandra Hills dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive educational environment for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

A not-for-profit organisation, The Sycamore School works to provide young people with opportunities to reach their potential.

As part of Autism Awareness Month in April, the Merlo team across 15 locations dress as “Superheroes for Sycamore School” Day and shine a light on the daily lives of children with ASD.

From every coffee sold on the day, $1 is donated to The Sycamore School to improve the resources and programs offered to students and their families.

SOCIAL AWARENESS

New Farm Community Cart

For more than 30 years the New Farm Neighbourhood Centrehas been working with the local community to support the welfare and well-being of socially, physically, intellectually and emotionally disadvantaged and vulnerable people.

The Centre also offers free help with housing and legal issues as well as providing a range of sporting and social activities in the area.

Located opposite the beautiful New Farm Park they provide a place for people to meet, to join activities and to tap into local support services. In 2016 Merlo Coffee further enhanced this meeting space by donating a new completely self-contained coffee cart, a coffee machine and all necessary equipment.

The Cart Community Coffee has not only created a hub for people to meet and support one another, it also allows the Centre to raise much needed funds to support ongoing work in the community. The cart is open daily from 6am to 12pm.

LIFE CHANGING CONVERSATIONS

R U OK? DAY

R U OK? Day aims to create a world where all people are connected and are protected from suicide. So if you notice someone who might be struggling, then grab a coffee and ask: “Are you ok?”. We’re proud to support the great work that R U OK Day does in encouraging these conversations to happen, not just today, but every day.

We’ll be supporting R U OK? Day on Thursday 12 September 2019 by offering 2 for 1 coffees at any Merlo owned store between the hours of 2pm and 4pm. Why not take a collegue, friend or loved one out for coffee and start a meaningful conversation.
