Cup of Excellence is the most prestigious coffee competition in the world – dedicated to finding the best of the best in each coffee producing country. In May this year, the competition travelled to Mexico to judge the offerings of the local growers, with outstanding results. Of the 22 finalists, 6 received a Presidential Award – a score of over 90 out of a possible 100 points. These are not only the best coffees from Mexico this year, but some of the most beautiful coffees you could hope to taste.
Of these, we are proud to offer the work of Guillermo Rivas Díaz from his farm Finca Kassandra. Coming in second overall, with a score from the International Panel of 90.57, this is a spectacular coffee, and the judges were effusive in their praise. A peak into their notes reveals descriptions like “elegant and balanced” with complex aromas and flavours described as everything from lavender to lemongrass, pineapple, passionfruit and jasmine, apple and black cherry.
The farm itself is a third-generation endeavour, with a focus on coffee quality and environmental conservation. The native scrub has been preserved as shade trees, with the coffee trees planted in-between. In the process of planting, a species of native elm which had thought to be extinct in the region was discovered and the family are working to reforest the area and preserve the native trees. The family process all of their own coffee with specially calibrated equipment, and take a hands-on approach to all aspects of coffee growing, from seed to cup.
This dedication to quality and care has created a very special coffee, one of the best that has ever come across our cupping table. We are incredibly excited that it is here and are delighted to be able to offer it to you.
